Other times, you end up in a new town, and it would sure be helpful to have someone who knows the area, the sites, the transit, the nightlife . . . and someone who, because they’re a CouchSurfer too, probably gets where you’re coming from.

Tip well. Every country and culture has a different approach to tipping. But don’t be fooled: if Europeans don’t tip waitstaff, it’s because their servers are paid well. Ours are not. Nor are our cleaning crews, doormen, porters, drivers . . . and their employers justify their low pay by arguing that they should factor in tips. So support the local economy and show your love of labor by respecting their work. Plus there are enough insults hurled about tourists; do your part to buck that trend.
